Dental Assistants are responsible for assisting the dentist in performing a variety of dental procedures and providing the patient with high-quality care.
Hawaii Dental Assisting Academy was founded in 2015. HDAA Dental program prepares students for careers in dental assisting in a variety of settings including general and specialty practices, dental clinics, and hospitals. Upon completion of this program, students will be prepared to enter the workforce with knowledge, skill s, and confidence. Students will learn front and back dental office skills, dental office management, chairside assisting, radiology, emergency procedures, and effective interpersonal communication.

Students develop skills to:

  • Use dental terminology as appropriate to the situation.
  • Perform basic chairside skills and clinical support required for a general or specialty dental practice including the ability to identify facial landmarks, chart existing conditions of the teeth and their diagnosed treatment and manipulate and handle dental materials proficiently.
  • Demonstrate competence in taking a full-mouth set of clinically diagnosable x-rays observing radiation safety standards.
  • Demonstrate competence with compliance to HIPAA standards and OSHA guidelines in the dental office including standard precautions and principles of asepsis.
  • Perform dental office administrative tasks professionally, ethically, and proficiently including the use of dental software, standard office applications, and the Internet.

HDAA Dental Assisting Program Courses are:

  • Four-Handed Dentistry
  • Dental Materials
  • Infection Control & Oral Anatomy
  • Radiology
  • Dental Office Management

Each course in the program has been carefully selected to assist students in reaching their goals as a knowledgeable and proficient dental assistant.

The program is 15 weeks and an externship is also provided.
Admission to HDAA requires that applicants do the following and must meet one of the requirements:

  • Provide proof of graduation from a high school that is recognized by the state/province
  • Provide proof of successfully completing high school equivalency as recognized by the state/providence (the General Education Development)
  • Interview with the Director
  • Immunization Record

Applicants are notified promptly of their acceptance status.

Evidence of High School graduation or equivalent must be submitted in one of the following forms:

  • Certified copy of an original High School Diploma
  • Copy of the High school transcript
  • GED certificate
  • College transcript indicating the date of High School graduation

The tuition for the complete training program is $4,500. Tuition covers the cost of the full training courses, Textbook, Workbook, handouts and material used for clinical and laboratory procedures, 1 set of HDAA scrub & 1 HDAA T-shirt is also included. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $80.
HDAA offers several payment options.

Day classes are scheduled every Thursday from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 – 5:00 PM.
Externships are offered Monday through Friday and some weekend shifts depending on the externship site’s work schedule.
The instructor may also schedule open labs on Saturday.
Yes, there is a graduation ceremony typically scheduled for the 16th week of the program. Prior to participating in graduation ceremonies, graduates must have completed their externship and cleared all academic and financial obligations.
Yes, National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA) can be taken after completing a minimum of 300 hours of working experience and a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) can be taken after 3,500 hours. The exam is administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). HDAA also provides assistance in taking the board exam once the student completed the requirements. A separate review program session is also available and being offered.
